Spectators

While in the office I just went through NDTV news and was just unhappy at the incidence of reading about Srinagar blasts. After evening walk I just put the TV on. Oops. What the hell is going on in Mumbai? What happened to Mumbai Police? What happened to Intelligence? What happened to RPF? How can there be Bombs in Coaches? Were they planted at Coaching Depot or what? What happened to alert Mumbaikars? Nobody suspected the Bombs? How can terror attack be so smooth and seamless? There are million such questions but no answers.
We are not a nation of billion people but a billion spectators. We just forget things easily and carry on with life battle. We are more divided than united people. That is the reason we forget things easily. We don't learn lessons from past mistakes. We do not act in the way we should. Take it easy attitude comes from our incapacity to standup and take a stand. Because we are a divided society, we burn our own buses and we create problems for our own people in the name of bandhs and Rasta rokhos. We do not like other religions, other castes or tribes. Even within the same sect we do not like our own sect people because of some or the other reason. It only shows we are all selfish people. Selfishness gives way to the attitude of: let anybody die, I am safe. Above all we have karma theory do justify our indifference.
I pray god to give strength to all the relatives and friends of the dead and I pray for the early recovery of the injured.

The Classic Class of 96

The rainy days in NIFM was almost nearing completion and just 60 more days to go. We collected our 2A pass from station and majority of IRAS 96 batch handed over the passes to a batch mate who got the reservation done. We were supposed to travel on 22nd October 1998. All of the batch mates know that the man who got the reservation is highly capable of doing so and therefore nobody asked for a ticked and all tickets were lying with him till D day.

And as time waits for none, the day of departure has come. First one to get out of NIFM was IDAS, then P&T and IRAS was the last one after seeing off everybody. Most of us individually & collectively met all staff of NIFM and particularly Professors for their cooperation in copying during exams. Settled Mess accounts and it was evening by the time Jasbir, the driver started loading the luggage in his Swaraj Majda.

We reached NDLS platform No.2 and waiting for Paschim Express and it just arrived. Reached 2A coach and some entered the coach while some checking the names in the chart. Those who went inside came out saying that the births are full. No names appeared in the charts of Both the 2A compartments. All of us gathered and surprised at the mystery. Asked our beloved batch mate to show the tickets and the tickets were checked. The reservation was done for 22nd September 98. Nobody was unhappy but all of started laughing at the incident.

What to do? Some said they go on next day, some said they shall go back to NIFM and some said chalo chalte ishi mei. 40 odd bags and suit cases on the platform. Within seconds all the luggage was in the corridor near the toilets of coach. Both the toilets were blocked. One birth we managed from SCRA boys traveling in the same coach and gave it to ladies and all the boys just spend the night standing in the train and some managed to sleep over luggage. Luckily it was night train all passengers understood our problem. This incidence united the batch and strengthened batch spirit.

My Photo

In 2002 when I was in Lumding, I needed a passport size photo. I rushed to the studio and photographed. Same day in the evening, the photographer came to my office and handed over the photos. Looking at my own photo I felt angry asked him, “ kya yaar tumko photo bhi kheenchna nahi aata, itna faltu photo leke aaya, poora Lumding isihihai”. The photographer actually thought I will thank him for door delivery but got surprised and took a minute to answer. The reply was “saabji, chehra jaisa rahega, photo bhi vyaisahi ayega na”.

My IAS story

I had prepared for Civil Services for about 4 years in the same Coaching Center. Most of the time we used to discuss subject topics and current affairs sitting in café in the same complex. The owner of the café is well aware of civil services since he is watching candidates for years. First time when I went to interview and could not appear in the list, he said OK this is just first time. Second time when I went to interview and could not appear in the list, he said something is wrong with UPSC. Third time I went to interview and got IRAS or some such central service and I was in happy mood with friends. This time he came to me and said, had you not been helping guiding these beautiful but dumb girls all these days, you would have been in IAS.
